Blown-In Batting (BIB) for Remodels and New Construction
When the walls are open to the studs, blown-in batting fills each cavity completely, around wires, pipes and boxes. Abraham uses it on new construction and full remodels, and he works with remodeling companies more than builders.

Blown-in batting vs. cut batts in an open stud wall
| In the open wall | Blown-in batting | Cut fiberglass batts |
|---|---|---|
| Around wiring, pipes and boxes | Fills in around them | Cut or squeezed to fit, which can leave gaps |
| Odd-sized or short cavities | Takes the shape of the cavity | Trimmed by hand to fit |
| Edges of the cavity | Filled edge to edge | Gaps where the batt doesn't meet the stud |

Only while the walls are open
It only works while the walls are open, which is why it's a new-construction and full-remodel job. The window is after the wiring and plumbing are roughed in and before the drywall goes up. Once the drywall is on, the option for those walls is dense-pack sidewall insulation instead. On a full remodel, it's the one chance to fill the exterior walls completely without drilling a single hole.
Fiberglass batts are also porous, and Abraham's point about fiberglass applies here too: air works its way through it. The material carries a 20-year warranty from Insulate Iowa.
He works with remodeling companies more than builders. If you're a remodeler with a gut job coming up, bring him in while the studs are still showing. Homeowners running their own remodel can call him directly too.

Blown-in batting questions from remodelers and homeowners
What is blown-in batting?
Loose insulation blown into open stud cavities while the walls are still open, so each cavity is filled. Abraham uses it on new construction and full remodels.
Can blown-in batting go into finished walls?
No, it needs open studs. For walls that are already closed up, the answer is dense-packing, done from outside or inside, with the holes patched by a filler that won't shrink or crack.
Is a remodel a good time to quiet the interior walls?
If the interior walls are open, it's the easiest time to fill them, and a filled cavity carries less sound than an empty one. Abraham's sound work usually goes into interior walls and floors anyway.
Do you work with homeowners on remodels, or only with contractors?
Both. Homeowners, remodelers, investors and landlords all hire Abraham. On blown-in batting, he works with remodeling companies more than with builders.
