Urbandale grew eightfold between 1950 and 1970
Urbandale incorporated on April 16, 1917, as a streetcar suburb of Des Moines. It stayed small for decades, with 1,777 people in 1950, then grew to 14,434 by 1970. Today it has about 46,600 people and 18,500 homes, split between Polk and Dallas counties, roughly two-thirds Polk. It's home to Living History Farms, and the city's Olmsted Family Farmhouse, built in 1904, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.
The boom shows in the housing. About a third of Urbandale homes were built before 1980, most of them in the 1960s and 70s, and only about 1 in 11 predates 1960. The median house was built in 1992.
So there are two Urbandales to think about. The 1960s and 70s houses are where the walls and the attic floor need a look. In the houses built since, start with attic depth and whether the blown-in insulation has settled below R-49.

Walls, attic floors and R-49 for Urbandale's boom-era houses
- Dense-packed exterior walls, including walls that already have batts
- Sealing around the soil pipe, the flue and the wall tops at the attic floor
- Cellulose blown to R-49 over the sealed floor, with baffles at the soffit vents
- Old insulation vacuumed out when it's in the way of sealing
In a ranch house, watch the chase over the basement stairs
If your Urbandale house is a ranch, the chaseway above the basement stairs is one of the spots Abraham pays special attention to. It can carry house air, and its moisture, straight up into the attic. He seals it along with the rest of the attic floor, including the soil pipe, the flue and the wall tops, before the new insulation goes on.
Questions about Urbandale houses
Does wall insulation go in from the outside or the inside?
Abraham dense-packs walls from the outside when he can. When the outside won't work, he fills them from inside the house instead.
Why is our upstairs so hot in summer?
One reason can be hot attic air working its way down into the house through the joints and seams at the tops of the walls. The same gaps let humidity escape into the attic in winter. Sealing them comes before any insulation on an attic job.
Is Insulate Iowa a local company?
Yes. Abraham LaMark started it in 2008, and it's still locally owned and operated, not a franchise. Being local is a big part of why people pick him over the big-name companies.
